The Thameslink network is in a period of gradual adjustment. While the introduction of the Class 700s is underway, established stock continues to cover a number of duties as required.
Today’s duty is 2W26, the 10:08 from Gatwick Airport to Bedford, worked by a 12-car Class 387. After emerging from the core, the service departs London St Pancras for the final leg north, where the route opens out and progress becomes more consistent.
With fewer interruptions and longer runs between stops, attention shifts to maintaining line speed and keeping the service within its booked path. The objective is uncomplicated: deliver the train into Bedford cleanly and on time, and allow the service to pass largely unnoticed — which, under the circumstances, is generally considered a success.
